A Healthy Smile for Valentine's Day

January 28, 2018

"Say (Raw Grass-Grazed) CHEEEEEEESE!"

As you're demonstrating your smile this Valentine's Day, let's make sure it's as healthy as can be! When I say "healthy", I'm not talking about cosmetic, I mean strong chompers that will help you avoid expensive and traumatic dental surgeries. Now THAT'S attractive!!! Enjoy this gift, my Valentines!

Portrait of the artist as a dental surgery disaster

If you've read my illustrated memoir Secrets of Silent James, you know I was plagued with health problems for most of my life. Growing up, I didn't know why I always had cavities. The visits to the dentist were so painful, I still have yet to recover. I was told the evil "bacteria" was winning the war over my teeth, and the dentist's only solution was surgery. Drilling, mercury fillings, root canals... ugh. When I was older and making my own decisions, I saw a holistic dentist and had most of my mercury removed and replaced. It was all very painful, expensive, and I still had no real understanding of how to keep my teeth healthy.

Esther got me a book called "Cure Tooth Decay" by Ramiel Nagel and it is a book everyone should read. Finally! I understood where tooth decay comes from, why I was plagued by dental issues growing up, and how to properly take care of my teeth.

Malnutrition, not bacteria!

The most eye opening insights of this fantastic book were concerning nutrition. When we look at modern diets, they are extremely deficient in fat-soluble vitamins. This causes imbalances in the blood, which makes the body send signals for the teeth to stop remineralizing. Once you start making better food choices, you can start healing your teeth. I'm talking beyond the "I already eat organic from Trader Joes, so I should be fine" mentality. This book goes into detail on which foods will set you on the path to curing tooth decay, and remineralizing your teeth.

"Malnutrition" could have been the title to my memoir, I ate so poorly as a child and young adult. It all makes sense why I was in the dentist's office so frequently, I just wish one of those dentists could have done the right thing and clued us in.

Another essential book is Nourishing Traditions by Sally Fallon. This is a book I've had for over a decade and it's full of traditional recipes and wisdom!

Lastly, please check out Nutrition and Physical Degeneration by Dr Weston A. Price. The three of these books will teach you a lot and give you some practical ideas on how to take care of yourself.

Love is not about buying harmful treats and disposable trinkets. It's about taking care of each other. I'd rather receive Blue Ice fermented cod liver oil than some chocolate covered tooth decay any day! All the books I mentioned make a great gift and are worth the price, and they're also available at your local library so, no excuse!

I hope you found this useful! Please share with you main squeeze and show them you really love them and their smile!
