Solving the World's Biggest Problems

November 5, 2018

Supporting Global Initiatives with Live Illustration

RELX Group held Inspiration Day in Silicon Valley, where they invited the most remarkable speakers to talk about "Disruptive Technology to Advance the SDGs". What are SDGs? They are Sustainable Development Goals, a collection of 17 global goals set by the United Nations General Assembly in 2015. Such a historic event needed to be immortalized... that's where I came in.

It was very exciting and refreshing to graphic record talks that were from a global perspective. They discussed the global agenda, in a very inclusive and informative way. Topics covered were the SDGs, tech exponential growth, investments, diversity, global connectivity, and breakthrough innovations. My approach was to capture all of the insights visually, and tell the complete story of the day. I decided to create one large board containing all of the talks because it was also going to be on display during their reception, and they wanted 1 dramatic centerpiece. It turned out very well, indeed!

The SDGs: The People's Goals

Here is a list of the SDGs:

GOAL 1: No Poverty

GOAL 2: Zero Hunger

GOAL 3: Good Health and Well-being

GOAL 4: Quality Education

GOAL 5: Gender Equality

GOAL 6: Clean Water and Sanitation

GOAL 7: Affordable and Clean Energy

GOAL 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth

GOAL 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure

GOAL 10: Reduced Inequality

GOAL 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities

GOAL 12: Responsible Consumption and Production

GOAL 13: Climate Action

GOAL 14: Life Below Water

GOAL 15: Life on Land

GOAL 16: Peace and Justice Strong Institutions

GOAL 17: Partnerships to achieve the Goal

Onsite Engagement

My live illustration service accomplishes many things, one of the most important being that it engages the audience and reinforces the content. Most people are visual learners, so when they see the talk come to life in words and pictures, they understand and retain more information. They're excited to take a closer look during the breaks between the sessions, and take photos of their favorite soundbites.

Visual Memories for Maximum Impact

At the end of the day, there is a beautiful visual summary of all of the content discussed. The physical board was displayed for their reception, and was the perfect tool to keep the conversation going. It also created a richer, branded experience for the group. A digital file of the work was sent to all the attendees, as well as shared on social to maximize the impact of the event. On a personal note, I was very invested in the content and it was an honor and a privilege to illustrate these powerful stories live. Silent James really is my dream job!
